J&K: Govt. rules out AFSPA repealing

Government today ruled out repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act , AFSPA, in Jammu and Kashmir. It,however, warned that not a single case of misuse of power will be tolerated. Delivering the key note address at a seminar on Internal Security in New Delhi, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said, without some special powers, the army cannot operate effectively.<br/><br/>Mr.Antony said the army had removed two divisions, comprising 30,000 troops, from the state in the last two years, and more troops would be withdrawn if the situation improved. The minister asserted that the government wants to see normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest and is not interested in largescale stationing of forces in the state permanently. He said terror in Jammu and Kashmir and northeast and left wing extremism in certain pockets require continuance of dedicated resources and efforts. He said the situation is further complicated due to external support to perpetrators.<br/>
