J&K Govt act tough against striking employees

Acting tough against its striking employees, J&K government today directed the police to check attendance in offices, prepare dossiers and videograph "trouble-makers". <br/><br/>The fresh order came after the employees remained on strike for the 5th consecutive day today undeterred by the state government invoking Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) and arresting over 37 union leaders. <br/><br/>The Striking employees are demanding release of 6th Pay Commission arrears, increase in the retirement age from 58 to 60 years and regularization of adhoc and contractual employees. <br/><br/>Meanwhile, the strike by employees ahs paralysed work in all the State Government offices, educational and health institutions and public sector undertakings with employees having made it clear that they will intensify their stir if their demands are not met by April 10.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that medical services in Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) hospitals and other associated hospitals are badly affected by the strike but the emergency services are partially on.<br/><br/>The Jammu range DIG was himself monitoring opening of Out Patient Department (OPD) at GMC hospital in order to ensure medicare facilities to needy.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called upon officers to ensure that people are not put to any inconvenience due of strike by employees, making it clear that no work no pay provision shall be strictly implemented for the striking employees.<br/><br/>However, he said the government has not closed its doors for negotiations and urged upon the employees to resume their duties in the larger public interest. He said the government is committed to fulfill the genuine demands of the employees most of which have already been met. He said government requires whooping sum of Rs 4200 crore to disburse the arrears on account of implementation of the Sixth Pay commission recommendations for which resources have to be arranged.
