Home Minister Rajnath Singh has said, more than one lakh thirty thousand people have been rescued by the Armed Forces in Jammu and Kashmir so far.
Addressing a press conference on 100 days of his Ministry in New Delhi today, he said, the Centre is taking immediate and pro-active action in rescue and relief operations in the flood-affected State.
He said the priority is to provide relief and assistance to affected people and operations are being closely monitored amd reviewed. He assured that there will be no shortage of relief materials in the State.
He said a scheme for mainstreaming civil defence in disaster risk reduction has been launched.
In flood ravaged Jammu and Kashmir, the situation continue to be grim in most parts of Srinagar where though water level has receded during last two days, some areas are yet under eight to 10 feet water. River Jehlum is still flowing above danger mark. Many roads including Srinagar-Jammu National Highway are still submerged.
Army, Indian Air Force and other security agencies continue shifting stranded people to safer places and dropping food items to marooned people. Expressing serious concern over the havoc created by floods in the State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that Government will provide six months free ration to the people.
The Chief Minister said that the State Government needs dewatering pumps to drain out the water from marooned areas. He said, till the road network is restored in Valley, the chopper service for dropping the food material will continue. A photographer Shafat Siddiqui working with a national Hindi daily has also died in the floods.
Jammu and Kashmir administration has ordered all Government employees to report to duty so that efforts can be ramped up to salvage the situation. As efforts to restore Jammu Srinagar National Highway are on, Army today evacuated 8000 people by road from Ramban and adjoining areas.
