J&K floods: Home Secy reviews rescue, relief work; Situation still grim

Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami reviewed the rescue and relief efforts in flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of allegations of tardy pace of salvage operations.

Mr. Goswami, arrived in Srinagar yesterday to coordinate relief and rescue work following a directive by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He took stock of the situation at a meeting held at the airport with state government officials, representatives of Army, Air Force and NDRF engaged in rescue and relief operations.

Goswami, who hails from J&K, also gave directions on how to reach out to the maximum number of flood-affected people at the shortest possible time, rescue those who are still stranded at various places and provide food, water and other essential commodities to the needy.

Meanwhile, water levels have receded but the situation in most parts of Srinagar continues to be grim. Many roads including Jammu-Srinagar Highway are still under water.

River Jhelum is still flowing above the danger mark. Over one lakh 10 thousand people have been rescued so far but lakhs of people are still waiting for help. AIR correspondent reports that Telecom services have been restored partially
