J&K floods: Centre assures more doctors, health workers to prevent epidemic

Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan,has proposed that boats should be mobilized to send medical supplies to the people of the inundated areas of Srinagar who find it impossible to venture out of their homes because of the high flood waters.

Returning Delhi after a day’s tour of the flood ravaged areas, Dr Harsh Vardhan said, the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah received his proposal positively.

He said, people suffering from diabetes, hypertension among the cut-off population need to be urgently rushed dozes of medicines. Only boats laden with such drugs can access such people. Dr Harsh Vardhan said, all assistance will be provided to the Jammu & Kashmir health authorities to tackle any possible epidemic as aftermath of floods and provide medicare to the people.

A Defence Ministry release said in New Delhi, thirty generator sets have also been sent to Srinagar to boost continuous power supply in relief camps and field hospitals. Two additional fully equipped field hospitals with laboratory testing equipment facility have also been established in Srinagar.

Additional equipment of BSNL is being dispatched to restore the communication systems in the State.

More relief materials including food packets, water bottles, blankets and tents are being airlifted from Patna, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Amritsar to the valley. Road connectivity from Batote to Anantnag and Srinagar to Sonamarg has been restored.
