J&K floods: 60% power supply restored in Kashmir; Over two lakh rescued so far

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said that 60 per cent power supply has been restored in Kashmir Valley so far. The Chief Minister said 85 per cent power supply has been restored in Jammu region. He assured that that power supply will be restored fully across Jammu division within 15 days.

The J&K Chief Minister sought central assistance to restore the health infrastructure affected due to floods and also to carry out an extensive measles vaccination programme for vulnerable age group of 0-15 years. He also informed that almost 50 lac chlorine tablets have been received and mobile purification plants are being used to provide safe drinking water to the people.

Our Correspondent reports that Armed Forces and NDRF have so far rescued over 2 lakh persons from different parts of the State, in the ongoing rescue and relief operations.

About 60 thousand persons have been rescued today. However over one lakh people are still marooned in flood water. Relief operations were briefly hampered this morning due to rains. According to MeT Department, however there is no possibility of heavy rains but there may be light to moderate rains in the State for next few days.

A Defence Ministry release said in New Delhi thirty generator sets have also been sent to Srinagar to boost continuous power supply in relief camps and field hospitals.

Two additional fully equipped field hospitals with laboratory testing equipment facility have also been established in Srinagar. Additional equipment of BSNL is being dispatched to restore the communication systems in the State.

More relief materials including food packets, water bottles, blankets and tents are being airlifted from Patna, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Amritsar to the valley.

Road connectivity from Batote to Anantnag and Srinagar to Sonamarg has been restored. Road between Srinagar to Baramulla is now open for light vehicles.
Jammu & Kashmir government today appealed to its employees to listen to their conscience and report for duty immediately. In a message broadcast on Radio Kashmir, the Chief Secretary to J&K government asked the government employees, who have not returned to work, to report for duty as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the National Crisis Management Committee headed by Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth met in New Delhi today to review relief work in flood-affected areas of Jammu and Kashmir. The Committee noted that the State Government machinery has geared up to take up relief work.

With an improved situation in the telecom, power, road transport and civil aviation sectors, relief and rehabilitation work is expected to further improve.
