J&K: Deck cleared for panchayat elections

In Jammu and Kashmir, a Cabinet Sub-Committee has cleared the deck for Panchayat Elections in the State. the committee was constituted by the State Cabinet yesterday, to examine the need for carrying out certain essential amendments in the J&K Panchayati Raj Act, 1989 to harmonize the Act with provisions of the constitution (73rd Amendment) Act 1992.The Cabinet Sub-Committee which met at Jammu today under the Chairmanship of Minister for Finance Abdul Rahim Rather held discussions on the subject and decided to submit a a comprehensive report to the Cabinet shortly. This is to ensure early Panchayati Raj elections.Later, Rather said that all the issues related to holding of Panchayat elections in the State have been resolved amicably and there is no hitch now in this regard. He said the Government is keen to hold the Panchayat Elections in the State at an earliest to decentralize powers at grass root level.
