J&K: Death toll reaches to three in Handwara firing

In Jammu & Kashmir, the death toll reached to three in the yesterday's firing incident in north Kashmir's Handwara town of Kupwara district. The critically injured 55 year old Raja Begum of Handwara area, who sustained bullet injuries in yesterday's incident, succumbed in hospital. <br/><br/>The situation in north Kashmir's Handwara town and adjacent areas of Kupwara district continued to be tense following the killing of two youths in alleged Army firing when locals were protesting alleged molestation bid of a local girl student. The slain youth were identified as Iqbal Farooq Pir and Naeem Qadir Bhat. <br/><br/>Mainstream political parties including National Conference, Congress, CPIM, Peoples Conference and Peoples Democratic Front have condemned the killing of youth and demanded an impartial judicial probe. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has expressed grief over the killing of two youth. Army has already ordered an inquiry into the incident. Authorities have imposed restrictions under Section 144 in Handwara and adjacent areas to maintain law and order. <br/><br/>Srinagar district administration also imposed restrictions in some areas of the summer capital today. Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Dr Farooq Ahmad Lone told AIR that restrictions will remain imposed in areas falling under six police stations including Rainawari, Maharaj Gunj, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Safakadal in old city and Maisuma in civil lines area.<br/><br/>Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today raised the issue of Handwara firing in which two civilians were killed with Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. She said, the minister assured her that a probe will be initiated and the culprits will be punished. The Chief Minister also raised the issue of handing over of civilian land from army to the state government.<br/>Ms. Mehbooba who is on her maiden visit to the national capital after assuming the post of Chief Minister, also met Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu to discuss various development projects being undertaken by the state and central government. She met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley yesterday.
