J&K: Centre initiates action on interlocutor’s recommendations

The Centre today said that it has initiated action on the recommendations of the group of interlocutors for Jammu and Kashmir. The interlocutors led by Dileep Padgaonkar had submitted their first report to the Centre after visiting the state from 23rd to 28th October, 2010. The recommendations include speeding up cases of undertrials, permitting peaceful protests and releasing protestors or militants against whom there are no serious charges and increasing efforts to trace missing persons. The group also suggested according special status to Paharis, representation to Gujjars and Bakarwals in political institutions and bureaucracy and raising monthly allowance to Kashmiri Pandits. Training of security forces, identifying jobs for young persons in centre and state government offices, promoting investments in Kashmir, scholarships for Kashmiri students and increasing monetary assistance to widows and orphans are among other suggestion. The Centre said that some of the recommendations have been sent to the state government for necessary action. The government is also actively considering the recommendations of the interlocutors in the report submitted after the second visit to the state from 9th to 14th of last month. The Centre had appointed Dileep Padgaonkar, M.M. Ansari and Ms Radhakumar to hold sustained dialogue with a wide range of representatives of political and public opinion in the state. They were also asked to drop a roadmap for a permanent settlement of the political problem in the state.
