J&K: Amarnath Yatra picks up after reopening of Sonamarg Baltal road

In Jammu & Kashmir, the Sonamarg Baltal road which remained blocked near the Fish Pond Point on Srinagar Ladakh highway in Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district for the last two days, is now through for two way traffic. Police Control Ganderbal official told AIR that the road was cleared for traffic yesterday. <br/><br/>Border Roads Organization (BRO) is working on full restoration of the parking area as well as the catch-water drain on hillside above Baltal Base Camp. BRO is also continuing its efforts to further strengthen the road to ensure that the pilgrims do not face any difficulty in movement to reach Baltal Base Camp. <br/><br/>Baltal Yatra Camp Director Pankaj Magotra told AIR that Yatra has picked up after clearance of Sonamarg Baltal road. Meanwhile, a fresh batch of 337 yatries this morning left from Jammu Base Camp for Kashmir. Till yesterday evening on 26th day of ongoing Yatra, more than 3 lakh devotees paid obeisance at the Holy Cave and had darshan of Shiv Lingam. <br/><br/>Pertinently, four persons including three non locals died after a cloudburst triggered flash floods in Baltal, one of the base camps of ongoing Amarnath Yatra, on Srinagar Ladakh highway in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir on July 24 night. The three deceased included two teenagers identified as 12 year old Pooja, 14 year old Vikram, two boot polish vendors from Rajasthan while 35 year old cobbler Deepak Kumar was from Delhi. One critically injured labourer of South Kashmir's Shopian district succumbed to his injuries in Srinagar hospital. Over a dozen shops, thirty tents, one and a half dozen vehicles were damaged and six ponies were washed away in the floods after cloudburst hit Zojila hills near Bajri Nallah, few metres away from Srinagar-Leh highway at 10 p.m. Friday night causing flash floods in the low lying areas outside the main Yatra entry gate. About 19 shops, 52 tents and 18 vehicles were damaged while six ponies were washed away in the floods.
