In Jammu and Kashmir, two people were killed and as many injured when Army personnel manning a mobile check post opened fire on a vehicle in Badgam district yesterday.
Defence Ministry spokesman Lt Colonel NN Joshi has expressed regret over the incident and ordered an inquiry into the circumstances leading to firing. He said, acting on a tip-off about the movement of militants in a vehicle, Army had set up three mobile check posts in the district. He said, the car involved in the incident did not stop at two check posts, despite being asked to do so. Army personnel opened fire at the third check point at Chatergam.
Lt Col Joshi said, four people travelling in the vehicle were injured. All the wounded were immediately shifted to the Army base hospital where two of them succumbed to their injuries. The condition of two other injured persons is stable.
Defence Minister Arun Jaitley has described the incident as highly regrettable. In a tweet, he said a fair inquiry will be held and action taken against those found guilty.
