Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren resigned last night after failing to get the support of Congress and its ally Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantric) ahead of today's trust vote in the state assembly.

Mr Soren submitted his resignation letter to Governor M O H Farooq shortly after 10 pm at Raj Bhavan.

Principal Secretary to Governor, Sudhir Tripathi said that Mr Farooq asked Mr Soren to continue as caretaker Chief Minister till further arrangement.

After BJP withdrew support to the state government on May 24 , the Governor had asked Mr Soren to prove his majority in the assembly by 31st of May. Mr Soren has the support of only 25 MLAs – JMM-18, AJSU-5 and Independent-2.

Welcoming Shibu Soren's resignation, the Congress said it is proper that the JMM chief did not seek floor test having failed to muster majority. Leader of opposition, Rajendra Prasad Singh of the Congress said the party will meet today to take stock of the situation along with its pre-poll ally JVM(P).

The trouble for the state government began after Mr Soren voted with the Manmohan Singh Government on a cut motion in Lok Sabha on April 27.
