Israeli police today stormed Jerusalem's holiest site The Al-Aqsa mosque which is revered by Muslims and Jews alike.Jerusalem Police spokesman, Shmuel Ben-Ruby, claimed that the police entered the compound when about 20 Palestinians threw stones. Four Israeli policemen were wounded during the clashes. One protester was arrested as the stone-throwing protests spread to the alleyways of the old walled city. The Al-Aqsa mosque compound is referred to as the Temple Mount by Jews and Al-Haram Al-Sharif or The Noble Sanctuary by Muslims. It is considered the holiest site in Judaism and the third holiest in Islam from where Prophet Mohammad is said to have ascended to heaven. In view of recent tensions at the site, police had overnight restricted the entrance to the mosque to a minimum age of 50, and holders of Israeli identity certificates.Adnan al-Husseini, a Palestinian Authority (PA) representative in Jerusalem, said that Palestinian youths had spent the night at the mosque saying Jewish hardliners had threatened to enter the site.
