JDU legislative Party meeting in Patna this evening to elect new leader

In Bihar, after the resignation of chief minister Nitish Kuamr, Janta Dal United MLAs will meet in Patna this evening to choose their leader. AIR Patna correspondent reports, before the JDU legislative members meeting, senior party leaders, legislators and workers are visiting Nitish Kumar’s residence since early morning to persuade him to rethink on his decision. Speculation is also there that JD(U) MLAs may re-elect Nitish Kumar as the leader of legislative assembly. However, a section of party leaders not happy with the Nitish Kumar decision of snapping ties with the BJP last year, are unlikely to support him again. Meanwhile, JD(U) Natioanl President Sharad Yadav has arrived in Patna and is holding talks with senior party leaders.

Congress has said, it will continue to support JD(U) even after resignation by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed told AIR that his party has been supporting JD(U) government from outside and there is no reason to discontinue it.

Meanwhile, JD(U) spokesperson K C Tyagi said the party is in talks with Congress to float a secular front in the State. He said his party will need Congress' support to form a new government.

JD(U) has 117 MLAs in 243-member Assembly and is supported by four Congress legislators and seven independents. Kumar yesterday resigned along with his council of ministers, but did not seek dissolution of the Assembly leaving option open for formation of a new government.
