JD (U)-BJP sweep Assembly elections in Bihar

The JD (U)-BJP combine has swept the Assembly elections in Bihar. The alliance has bagged three-fourth majority winning 197 of the 230 seats, results of which have been declared so far. The alliance had 143 seats in the outgoing house. It is also leading in 10 constituencies. The RJD-LJP alliance and Congress have fared badly. The alliance had 64 seats in the previous assembly but has so far won only 24 seats and is leading in one. The Congress, which had nine seats, could win only four this time. Others including Independents had 27 seats in the House but could win only six seats this time and are leading in two. Nitish Kumar will be sworn in as the Chief Minister for the second term on Friday. In Banka Parliamentary by-poll in the state, Independent candidate Putul Kumari, widow of former MP Digvijay Singh, is leading by more than 30,000 votes after 16 rounds of counting over her nearest RJD rival Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav. Congress has extended moral support to her. The seat fell vacant following the death of sitting MP Digvijay Singh. Former Chief Minister and RJD leader Rabri Devi has lost from both the constituencies in Bihar. She lost from her sitting Raghopur and the Sonepur assembly constituencies. RJD State President Abdul Bari Siddiqui has won from Alinagar seat. Among the prominent winners are the BJP Minister Renu Devi who defeated Congress nominee Madan Mohan Tiwari by about 15,000 votes in Bettiah constituency. Other prominent winners are Nand Kishore Yadav of the BJP, Hari Narayan Singh and Brishen Patel of JD (U), all ministers in the outgoing government and State JD(U) Chief Vijay Kumar Chaudhary.State President of LJP and brother of Party leader Ram Vilas Paswan Pashupati Kumar Paras has been defeated in the Alauli reserved constituency by Ramchandra Sada of JD(U).State Congress President Mehboob Ali has lost from Simri Bakhtiyarpur while former State Congress President Sadanand Singh has won from Kahalgaon.The JD (U) Minister Ram Nath Thakur has lost in the Samastipur seat. Former Union Minister Kanti Singh of the RJD has been defeated in the Nokha constituency. Reacting on the poll outcome, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said, the results are victory of the people and the verdict will be disappointment for those doing caste based politics. He said, he will have to work harder than he did in last five years and will not hesitate to do it.Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has congratulated Nitish Kumar. Dr Singh spoke to him and assured him that the Centre will work with the state government for the development of Bihar.Congress leader Sonia Gandhi said it was a deliberate decision of the party to go it alone in the Bihar polls. Accepting the outcome of the assembly polls, the Congress spokesman Manish Tiwari said the party fought the elections in the state on its own and there were difficulties in doing so.
