With just 17 overs remaining to be bowled on the 3rd day of the 1st Test match being played at Ahmedabad, the Sri Lankan havw aurpassed India's first inning score of 426 and are leading by 112 runs. Mahela Jayawardene ground the Indian bowlers through the first two sessions, carrying the visitors to a lead of 112 and threatening to take them into a territory from where they can rule out a defeat. This was only the second time Sri Lanka have taken a first-innings lead in India, and only the first time they have crossed 450 in the country. Jayawardene was supported by Thilan Samaraweera in the first session, Prasanna Jayawardene in the second, and by the slowness of the pitch in both. Along the way, he reached his 27th century, a spotless effort.Sri Lanka started the day 151 runs behind, knowing they needed a lead of at least 70 runs to compensate for having to bat last on a pitch that is taking turn. But both Jayawardene and Samaraweera negotiated it comfortably in the morning. India were made to bowl spinners for the first 10 overs before the new ball was due. And for some reason, they came out in the containment mode, with a deep point for Harbhajan, who watched a couple of late-cuts from Jayawardene go for fours through third man. Both Jayawardene (175) and Prasanna (72) are at the crease and the total Lanka score stands at 546 with 16 overs yet to be bowled before the stumps are drawn on the third day. Lankans still have five wickets in hand.
