Union Environment Minister Mrs Jayanti Natrajan has said that India sees the upcoming Rio + 20 Summit in Brazil as an opportunity to bring back sustainable development to the centre of the global development agenda.
Briefing newsmen in New Delhi today, she said the conference being held 20 years after the Earth Summit will provide a platform to the global community to look for innovative templates to spur global action on sustainablity.
Mrs Natrajan, who will be participating in the RIO conclave said India strongly believes that any understanding on Green Economy must take into account the principles of Equity and Common but differentiated responsiblity.
Reflecting on the stand taken by India on Environment and development, the Minister said New Delhi does not favour setting up quantitative targets which would serve to constrain economic development without provision of means of implementation to developing countries.
Mrs Jayanti Natrajan said that India has committed to cut emissions by 20 percent by 2020 on a voluntary basis and said several legislations and mandates are in place to tackle the impact of climate change.
