Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa has requested the Centre to withdraw a notification on laying a 310 km natural gas pipeline through farm lands in the state by the Gas Authority of India Limited-GAIL. The Kochi – Bengaluru pipeline project has been opposed by the farmers bodies from seven districts saying their livelihood will be affected. Hearing a petition on the issue, the Supreme Court recently held that once the notification on the right of land is issued, the power of rescinding it is vested only with the Centre.
