Jayalalithaa seeks PM's intervention for installation of Thiruvalluvar statue in Haridwar

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's action for the installation of the statue of prominent Tamil saint poet Thiruvalluvar at an appropriate location in Haridwar.

The BJP Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Vijay took the initiative to install the 12-feet tall statue of the poet there, who is believed to have written the collection of couplets called Tirukkural several years before Christ, which is regarded as one of the largest translated literary masterpieces.

Due to local protests, installation of the statue was prevented at Har ki Pauri in Haridwar and was shifted to the Shankaracharya Chowk in the pilgrim town.

However, continued protests prevented the unveiling there also and the statue was temporarily installed in the Dam Kothi Guest House, Haridwar, in the presence of the Governors of Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya.

But recent photographs in newspapers and television footage show the statue lying on the floor wrapped in the Dam Kothi Guest House, Haridwar.

In the wake of recent developments, Ms Jayalalithaa has written a demi-official letter to Prime Minister Modi that the visuals are causing outrage in Tamil Nadu, and has requested him to take up the matter with the Government of Uttarakhand urgently to ensure that the statue of Tiruvalluvar is treated with due respect and installed at an appropriate location at the earliest.

She has added that failure in the installation would lead to the whole objective of the project completely defeated. BJP leader Tarun Vijay also undertook a procession from Kanyakumari to Haridwar on 18th last month as a prelude to the installation of the statue.

The object of the initiative was to show solidarity of the North with the poet's universal messages of principled living and to promote goodwill. Mr Tarun Vijay has clarified in a newspaper column that after his procession is over, the statue will be installed as planned
