Jayalalithaa demise: Leaders pay homage to Amma

A host of leaders including President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed grief over the demise of Jayalalithaa. Mr. Mukherjee said, Jayalalithaa was one of the country's most charismatic and popular leaders. Mr. Ansari said Jayalalithaa's demise is an irreparable loss to the people of the country.<br/><br/>In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister said he is deeply saddened at her passing away which has left a huge void in Indian politics. Mr. Modi said her connect with citizens, concern for the welfare of poor, the women and marginalised will always be a source of inspiration.<br/><br/>Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu said Jayalalithaa lived for Tamil Nadu and will continue to live in the hearts of the people forever. Mr. Naidu said he always admired her courage, conviction, dynamism, wisdom and bold administration. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu was the first Union Minister to pay his respects to the departed leader. In his message today, he called Ms.Jayalalithaa as an affectionate sister and a bold women leader who worked for women's empowerment. He also recalled the last function on the inaugural of metro train phase two.<br/><br/>Mr.Venkaiah Naidu also told that he had discussed with the doctors at the Apollo hospital on trying to save Ms.Jayalalithaa when he visited the hospital at 7.30 pm yesterday. Mr.Naidu could be seen seated at the pedestal in a chair where the mortal remains of the departed leader has been kept.<br/><br/>Telangana Chief Minister Chandrasekhara Rao has expressed grief over the demise of J Jayalalithaa. He said, Jayalalithaa's revolutionary decisions made her a leader of the masses. He said she took courageous decisions for people when she established popular governments twice in politically sensitive State of Tamil Nadu. Mr Rao said her demise is an irrevocable loss for people of Tamil Nadu.<br/><br/>Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has condoled the death of J Jayalalithaa. He said that her passing away is a great loss to Tamil Nadu and its people. He said that the people of Madhya Pradesh stand by them in this hour of grief. Mr. Chouhan has left for Chennai to pay respect to the departed leader.<br/><br/>Assam Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal has condoled the passing away of Jayalalithaa. Press Adviser to the Chief Minister said that state Industry minister Chandra Mohan Patowary will attend the funeral of Jayalalithaa on behalf of the Assam government.<br/><br/>Tamil Nadu Governor Vidyasagar Rao, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, the party Vice President Rahul Gandhi and DMK leader MK Stalin have also condoled her demise. A host of film personalities including Rajnikanth and Amitabh Bachchan have also condoled the demise of Jayalalithaa.<br/><br/>Several Union Ministers and leaders have mourned the death of Jayalalithaa. Talking to reporters outside Parliament, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, she had emerged as an icon in the Indian politics.<br/><br/>Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar termed her as a people's Chief Minister, who worked for the poor. He said she had taken several initiatives for the welfare of the poor, which are being followed by other states.<br/><br/>Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said her death is an irreparable loss.<br/><br/>Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said India has lost one of its shining stars. He said she made her mark both as an artist and a politician.<br/><br/>NCP Chief Sharad Pawar described her as a strong leader, who worked to bring South in the national main stream.<br/><br/>TMC leader Derek O'Brien said she was a bold and efficient leader.<br/><br/>BJD leader Baijayant Jay Panda termed her passing away as a national loss. <br/><br/>Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal has expressed deep sorrow and sympathy with people of Tamil Nadu over the death of Jayalalithaa. He said that no cultural and entertainment related programmes will be held in the State today.
