Jayalalithaa continues to be critical following cardiac arrest

The condition of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa continues to be critical. According to the latest update from Apollo Hospitals, her health is being closely monitored.<br/><br/>The ailing Chief Minister is on treatment for 74 days at the hospital for various ailments and has been on and off life support sytems. Her condition became critical when she suffered a cardiac arrest last evening. The Chief Minister was given the extracorporeal membrane heart assist device after her condition became critical.<br/><br/>Security has been stepped up in and around the Hospital and also at the city. Two IGs have been nominated to take charge of the law and order situation. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Venkaiah Naidu is visiting the Apollo hospitals. BJP Chief Amit Shah is also expected to visit the ailing leader today.<br/><br/>Earlier today, AIADMK MLAs gathered at the Hospital for a brief meeting chaired by State finance Minister O. Panneerselvam. A wide section of leaders from all parties wished the Chief Minister a speedy recovery. Scores of party cadres are still at the Apollo Hospitals, and are having anxious moments.<br/><br/>Over two thousand police officials are at the hospital providing tight security. Paramilitary personnel will also be deployed to add more security to the state capital. Educational Institutions and private offices closed early in the evening.<br/><br/>In Chennai, city roads have gone empty and buses stopped plying from the roads since late this evening. Shops have downed their shutters early for the day today.<br/><br/>Situation at the Apollo hospital saw some anxious moments this evening as some media started spreading the wrong news, those gathered rushed towards the gate to enter inside the hospital.<br/><br/>Police have stepped up vigil around the hospital and additional police have been deployed. There were reports that buses plying at the State borders of Karnataka and Kerala remained closed.
