Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has written a letter today to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the immediate release of 68 fishermen from the state lodged in Lankan jail. She requested the PM to direct external affairs ministry officials to take diplomatic measures to ensure the release of 78 fishing boats detained by Sri Lanka. <br/><br/>There is no end to the sufferings of fishermen from Tamil Nadu as Sri Lankan Navy continues to apprehend them for crossing the international maritime boundary line. Earlier Sri Lankan Navy arrested only fishermen in mechanized fishing boats for poaching. But now Lankan Navy has started attacking fishermen in country boats. Last week Sri Lankan Navy arrested twenty fishermen from Thoothukudi who were fishing in country boats. <br/><br/>The Sri Lankan Navy also detained three country fishing boats. Sri Lankan Navy arrested four fishermen from Pudukottai Kottaipattinam and detained their fishing boat on Wednesday. The local fishermen urge the immediate release of more than 68 fellow fishermen languishing in Lankan jail. The fishermen also want Lanka to release 78 fishing boats as their livelihood is badly affected.
