Jaya urges PM to secure release of 21 TN fishermen from Lanka

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has written a letter today to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the release of twenty one fishermen apprehended by Sri Lankan Navy. She requested the Prime Minister to direct External Affairs Ministry to take up the matter with Sri Lankan authorities. <br/><br/>The fishermen issue continues to create tension in the fishermen hamlets of Tamil Nadu. Twenty one fishermen from Rameswaram, Pudukottai-Kottaipattinam are languishing in Sri Lankan jail for the past ten days. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalaithaa is writing a letter for the second time in this month urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps for the release of innocent fishermen. <br/><br/>She had pointed out that Sri Lankan strategy of releasing fishermen and detaining their fishing boats is throttling the livelihood of fishermen. Sri Lanka has detained more than 92 fishing boats as a deterrent measure.<br/><br/> Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said that ceding Katchatheevu islands to Sri Lanka through 1974 and 1976 India-Sri Lanka agreements should be annulled. The traditional rights of Tamil Nadu fishermen should be restored and a lasting solution to the issue will have to be found.
