The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in a letter to the Prime Minister today, has requested his intervention on the issue of attacks on Indian fishermen. She has pointed out that the Sri Lankan Government is involved in dialogue to sort out the fishermen issue on the one hand and had been resorting to violence against them on the other. The Chief Minister reiterated that even on the day the Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai left for Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan Navy chased away Indian fishermen in the sea by firing in the air off Mandapam Coast of Ramanathapuram District. Ms. Jayalalithaa said that the issue should not be treated as an isolated problem of Tamil Nadu but should be treated as a National issue.
