Jaya appeals to PM to intervene in Mullaperiyar Dam issue

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has appealed to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to intervene in the Mullaperiyar issue. In a statement yesterday, Ms. Jayalalithaa wanted the Kerala Government to abide by the Supreme Court’s order in 2006 and allow the water level to be raised to 142 ft. She noted that the order was given after the Court was satisfied with the safety aspects.

Assuring that the seepage of the dam is well within the permissible levels, Jayalalithaa criticised the political parties in Kerala for escalating fear psychosis among the people.

She reiterated that Centre should ask the Kerala Government to desist from building a new dam and said that the AIDMK MPs would be meeting Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today.
