Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama will arrive on a three day visit to India. Strengthening defence and economic ties will be high on the agenda during the talks between the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and his Japanese counterpart. Cooperation in civil nuclear energy is also another important issue that will be taken up during at the talks. Before flying to Delhi, the Japanese Prime Minister will first visit Mumbai where he will pay tributes to the victims of 26/11 attack and will also interact with the captains of Indian industry in India's commercial capital on Monday.External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said in New Delhi that the first stand alone visit by Japanese Prime Minister after he assumed office in September reflects the continued commitment of both sides towards strengthening bilateral ties. In reply to a question on whether the issue of civil nuclear energy will come up for dicussion, Vishnu Prakash said that energy security is a very important area for India. He said that both sides agree that nuclear energy is a safe, non-polluting and renewable source of energy. He said they have exchanged views on nuclear energy policy and India will be happy to take the process forward. AIR correspondent reports that the two countries are close to firming up an action plan to add more content to their defence ties. On the economic front, the two leaders are expected to give a push to negotiations for a bilateral Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). India and Japan had decided to launch negotiations for the conclusion of an EPA in 2006 but despite 12 rounds of talks, some issues still remain to be resolved for the finalisation of the agreement. The two countries have set the target of their bilateral trade to 20 billion dollars by the end of next year.
