Japan has warned China that they must both avoid stirring up extreme nationalism in their continuing row over the detention of a Chinese sea captain. The Japanese government said it wanted to use all possible channels to avoid any further escalation. On Sunday, China said that it has suspended senior government level exchanges with Japan. It has demanded the immediate release of the Chinese captain who is being questioned about a collision between his fishing boat and Japanese patrol vessels in disputed waters.
