Japan PM survives leadership challenge

The Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Naoto Kan has survived a challenge to his party leadership after just three months in office. Mr. Kan has been re-elected head of the governing Democratic Party of Japan beating his rival, the veteran politician Ichiro Ozawa by an unexpectedly wide margin. The power struggle came as Japan's currency, the Yen rose to its highest level against the Dollar in fifteen years. It rise in recent months has damaged Japanese exports and hampered economic recovery. Mr. Ozawa had wanted more spending to boost the economy.
