The Japan government today, ordered TEPCO, the operator of the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant to pay about 12,000 US Dollars to each household forced to evacuate due to radiation leak. Thousands of residents near the Nuclear Plant are unable to return to their homes near the nuclear plant and bereft of their livelihoods and possessions. Some of them traveled hundreds of kilometers to Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s headquarters in Tokyo to press for their demands for compensation. Hiroaki Wada, a Trade Ministry spokesman, today said that TEPCO will pay compensation of 12000 USD to families and 9,000 USD to individuals. He said, around 150 evacuation centers have been set up. Around 48,000 families living within 30 kilometers of the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant would be eligible for the payments. Meanwhile, TEPCO workers are still struggling to stabilize the nuclear plant cooling systems that failed after the 9 magnitude earthquake and a massive tsunami hit it on the 11th of last month. Radiation leaks from the nuclear plant have contaminated crops and also affected fishing. Nearly 1 lakh 40,000 people are still living in shelters after losing their homes or being advised to evacuate due to concerns about radiation.
