Japan has reported an increase in factory production for the first time in six months, easing fears that its economy could slip back into recession. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said today that factory output was up by one per cent in November over the previous month. It said a survey of manufacturers forecast additional gains of more than three per cent for December and January. The improvement has been attributed to stronger demand for Japanese products across Asia. But officials said they remain concerned about a rising yen, which makes Japanese exports less competitive, and will act if necessary to keep the currency in check.
