Japan has been put on maximum alert following detection of plutonium in soil of its crippled Fukushima nuclear plant. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan told Parliament that the situation at the troubled nuclear plant continues to be unpredictable. He said it is likely that the six-reactor Fukushima plant will eventually be decommissioned. As fears of more serious contamination grew, the government on Tuesday admitted that its safeguards were insufficient to protect the power plant against the tsunami. French President Nicolas Sarkozy will travel to Japan on Thursday to offer support to the country after its earthquake, tsunami and nuclear reactor crisis. The French President’s office said in a statement that Sarkozy is going on behalf of the Group of 20 leading world economies.
