Japan has asked Russia to send a special radiation treatment ship used to decommission nuclear submarines. Japanese media reported the move comes following the Engineers at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant were forced to release radioactive water into the sea after it ran out of storage capacity for more highly contaminated water. The floating radiation treatment plant called Suzuran will solidify contaminated liquid waste from the country's crippled nuclear power plant. Meanhwile, Operator Tokyo Electric Power Co,TEPCO, said today it started paying condolence money to local governments to aid people evacuated from around its stricken plant. TEPCO is facing a huge compensation bill, but said it must first assess the extent of damage before paying compensation. Koichi Nakamura, a deputy director-general of Japan's Nuclear Industrial Safety Agency, told a news conference in Vienna that Japan had not ruled out expanding a 20-km evacuation zone around the site. Japanese Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda said on Tuesday that he plans to seek continued cooperation from the Group of Seven countries at a meeting this month.
