The Aam Aadmi party government will introduce the Jan Lokpal Bill in the Delhi Assembly today. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal told this to reporters last night. He also threatened to quit if the proposed legislation was defeated.
The Jan Lokpal Bill could not be tabled in the Assembly yesterday. The House witnessed unprecedented chaotic scenes as both BJP and Congress MLAs disrupted proceedings demanding Law Minister Somnath Bharti's resignation over his alleged involvement in a midnight raid episode in South Delhi.
In an unprecedented move, the Delhi Assembly yesterday passed a resolution curtailing certain powers of Speaker, M S Dhir. The resolution to curtail the Speaker's power to suspend any unruly legislator was moved by Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Arvinder Singh Lovely.
When put to voice vote, the resolution was supported by all Congress and BJP MLAs, besides the lone JD(U) legislator and an Independent MLA. Lovely had moved the resolution, accusing the Speaker of not running the House in an impartial manner.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal alleged that there is a match fixing between BJP and Congress to obstruct the proceedings of the House so that the Jan Lokpal Bill is not passed.
In another development, the Delhi Cabinet has cleared the Swaraj Bill, which intends to devolve power directly to the people to curb corruption at the local level.
