Reserve Bank of India, RBI Governor, Raghuram Rajan today cautioned banks on the risks involved in just hunting for numbers under the Jan Dhan scheme. He asked them not to compromise on the core objectives of the programme.Addressing the annual industry conference organised by FICCI, Rajan said that the target is universality, not just speed and numbers. He added that the scheme can be a waste if it leads to duplication of accounts. The State Bank of India and other banks have opened over 3 crore basic accounts within a fortnight of the launch of the scheme on August 28. Experts have for long, been asking for the need to ensure transactions in the no-frills accounts, rather than opening accounts alone.
