Jammu-Srinagar NH remains closed for vehicular traffic for 4th consecutive day

In Jammu and Kashmir, the 270 km long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH 44), the only all-weather surface link which connects Kashmir valley with the rest of the country remained closed for vehicular traffic for the forth consecutive day today.

The highway was closed for vehicular traffic on Saturday following incessant rains that triggered multiple landslides at several locations and also severely damaged a portion of the road near Panthiyal Tunnel and Chamba-Seeri in Ramban district, leaving thousands of vehicles stranded.

A 60-metre strip of road was washed away near Panthiyal tunnel resulting the closure of the national highway.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is working round the clock at Chamba-Seeri and is working on an alternate alignment to ensure early restoration of the road.

The restoration work will take some time and the stranded vehicles will be cleared on priority once the road is made motorable. However, no fresh traffic will be allowed either from Jammu or Srinagar till the clearance of the stranded vehicles.

The traffic is likely to resume on the national highway tomorrow.

Jammu-Srinagar NH remains closed for vehicular traffic for 4th consecutive day

In Jammu and Kashmir, the 270-kilometre long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) remains closed for vehicular traffic for the fourth consecutive day today due to landslide and sinking of the National Highway between Dalwas, Nashri and Peedha in the wee hours on Tuesday and fresh landslides at multiple locations yesterday.<br />''<br />''The only all-weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country was damaged due to a massive landslide and sinking of about 50 metres stretch of the road at Dhalwas due to heavy rainfall on Tuesday. Moreover, incessant overnight rainfall triggered fresh landslides and shooting stones at Panthial, Mom Passi, Battery Chasms, Marog and Cafeteria Morh on the outskirts of Ramban town last afternoon that has aggravated the situation. Hundred of vehicles, mostly those carrying essential commodities have been stranded in long queues on the highway at different locations and on both the ends of the blocked site. <br />''<br />''<span style="color: #222222;">Men and machinery have been mobilized to the spots for the clearance of the debris and making the national highway traffic-worthy but heavy rainfall since yesterday is hampering the debris and muck clearance operation from the road. The incessant drizzle and continuous sinking of road at Dhalwas since morning also hampered the clearance of debris and muck from the road. Following heavy rainfall, efforts to reopen the national highway have been hampered and due to fresh landslides, the debris clearance operations could not be carried out properly. The possibility of opening of the national highway today is bleak.</span><br />
