‘Jammu Bandh’ to protest against police lathicharge

In Jammu and Kashmir, a bandh is being observed in Jammu today in protest against police lathicharge and bursting of tear gas shells on a mob in Rajouri town on Thursday in which several persons were injured. They were demanding arrest of all the anti-social elements who had pelted stones on a religious procession on the eve of Holi festival which had led to clashes in the town and subsequent imposition of curfew.All the shops, business establishments and educational institutions are closed in Jammu today. Attendance in Government offices is very thin as public transport is off the roads on several routes. However,private vehicles are plying on the roads. Reports of bandh have also come from Udhampur, Reasi and Samba. Police and additional forces have been deployed in strength in Jammu and other parts to ensure that no untoward incident takes place. Meanwhile, situation in Rajouri town is returning to normal with a Group of Ministers camping in the town and talking to cross section of people for defusing the tension. Curfew which was re-imposed in Rajouri town on Thursday has been relaxed from 8 am to 3 p.m today.
