Jaitapur nuclear power project will be implemented despite all hurdles: Ramesh

Union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh on Friday said that the 9,900 MW Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra will be implemented despite all hurdles. Jairam Ramesh was speaking at a press conference in Mumbai. He said that whatever be the opposition, the government would go ahead with the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project, taking into consideration all aspects of environment and security norms. Replying to a query on whether he would take note of the villagers' opposition to this project as he did in case of POSCO in Orrisa, Ramesh said that he had not received any memorandum from the people of Ratnagiri. He also stated that as it does not fall under the purview of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the villagers' opposition would not be binding on them. Answering another query, the minister said that he has suggested to the central government that the security systems of all the six reactors at the project should not be interlinked. He said that they must be independent of each other to avoid a situation like the recent nuclear disaster in Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan.
