Jaitapur Nuclear Power plant gets environment clearance

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan quashed all doubts and fears on 10,000 Mega Watt Nuclear Power plant in Jaitapur and urged the locals to not to get swayed by people who are opposing the project. Addressing a huge gathering of the local people at Jaitapur in Ratnagiri District, Chavan said the Union Environment Ministry has cleared the project after considering all its pros and cons and it would not affect the lives of the local people and the environment. He said the protest does not have any scientific base and is politically motivated.Chavan said considering the need for power in the present scenario, the project is important and added that it would benefit the common man. Inviting people and organisations opposing the project for a one on one discussion, Chavan said that he is ready for an open debate on the project. The Chief Minister is on a special visit to the region to interact with the locals on the various aspects of the project as some of the local people, activists and social groups have been protesting against setting up the power plant due to environmental hazards and various other issues.
