Union Minister Jairam Ramesh has said that the BJP out-funded Congress as far as campaign spending for just concluded Lok Sabha elections is concerned.
He claimed that while BJP leader Narendra Modi's campaign spending had reached an obscene level, the Congress's expenditure had been mere peanuts in comparison.
In an interaction with mediapersons at the Indian Women's Press Corps in New Delhi, Ramesh demanded a serious expenditure audit of the money spent by parties during the polls.
He also came out with a proposal to check overspending during poll campaigning and suggested abolition of the MP-LAD scheme and using the money to state-fund elections.
Ramesh said, he is appalled by the level of spending by candidates for Assembly and Lok Sabha polls and all parties should reach a consensus on electoral reforms.
