The Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh is meeting anti-dam groups for a public hearing in Guwahati today. The idea of holding a public hearing was mooted by the Minister at his own interest following large-scale protests by different social groups of Assam demanding a full stop on the on-going construction works in the 2000 megawatt-capacity Lower Subansiri Hydro electric project in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh. The anti-dam groups, including the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity, raised their voices in public as a large portion of Assam areas in lower belt are likely to have a cascading effect on the environment and eco-system if the project is materialized. Mr. Ramesh who was scheduled to visit the Project site in Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh has postponed his proposed programme as the mighty river Siang is flowing in a high spate following incessant rains in the catchment areas. Meanwhile, a high alert has been sounded in Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh and neighbouring Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts of Assam following threat of flash floods of the Siang river.
