Sri Lankan government says that landmines have been removed from an area of 1,113 square kilometres in the North. It covers 640 villages in Kilinochchi, Mullative and Mannar districts. The government SAID that the Jaffna district has been cleared of landmines. Nearly 1.5 million landmines laid by the LTTE have been removed so far. More than one thousand security forces personnel are engaged in the clearing operations. Some foreign organisations also assisted in the operation. Resettlement in Kilinochchi, Mullative and Mannar has begun with the removal of landmines.
