Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said that the Panchayat elections in the state would be held during September-October this year so as to transfer power to the people at grass roots. Addressing a grand Gram Sabha convention on Thursday, Omar said that Government cannot make decisions of development for remote and far flung villages by sitting in the Civil Secretariat adding the Panchayats are the forums which could formulate and implement the development plans of these areas. <br/>Co-relating the development of villages with overall development of the state, Mr. Omar said that over 70 per cent population of the state live in villages and government has focused on the equitable development of all areas. Omar said that a model Jammu and Kashmir with self-reliance in economy is his cherished goal saying he wanted to see J&K state an example for other states in all fields of development and prosperity. He sought the co-operation of people in realizing this stupendous task. <br/>The Panchayat polls were due in 2006 but could not be held for various reasons all these years. The last time such polls were held in the state after 20 years in 2001.<br/>
