In Ivory Coast, the National Assembly has approved the draft of a new constitution proposed by President Alassane Ouattara to ease nationality rules for presidential candidates, a move the government says will end prolonged instability.

The new proposals soften the nationality clause that both parents of presidential candidates must be native-born Ivorians, which had been used by Ouattara's opponents to bar him from elections. Of 250 members of Parliament, 239 voted for the constitutional change while eight voted against and two abstained. The new constitution will now be presented before people in a referendum to be held on 30th of this month.
