Italian Marines case: SC exempts Centre from filing status report before it on proceedings before international tribunal.

Supreme Court has exempted the Centre from filing status reports every 3 months on proceedings before the international tribunal in the Italian marines case. The apex court also asked the Centre to keep Kerala government posted on the proceedings before the tribunal against mariners Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone.

The case is presently pending in the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague to adjudicate on whether India or Italy has the jurisdiction to extradite the accused marines. In September last year, the Supreme Court had decided that Latorre be allowed to stay in Italy till the issue of his jurisdiction is decided.

The other accused in the case, Salvatore Girone, is permanently back in Italy after being allowed by the apex court to return in September 2014 on humanitarian grounds.
