IT authorities seize cash, jewellery worth over 1.32 crore rupees

As part of its drive to prevent use of unaccounted money in elections, the Income Tax authorities on Wednesday seized cash and jewellery worth over 1.32 crore rupees in poll-bound Tamil Nadu. Sleuths of Income tax department seized 77 lakh in cash and jewellery worth 55 lakhs from Maria John in Tirunelveli in the state. Election Commission and the IT department had seized 28.39 crore rupees in cash and 5.42 crores worth of gold and other items in Tamil Nadu till Tuesday. EC sources said five lakh rupees was recovered in Karimganj in Assam. In Burdwan district of West Bengal, RPF seized 30.98 lakh rupees from a passenger. The Commission said that a total of 42.75 crores in cash and kind had been seized so far in poll-bound states of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Assam.
