Istanbul talks on Iran nuclear programme begin today

Six major world powers – US, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China engage in technical expert level talks with Iran in Istanbul today. Ahead of the talks, the European Union Foreign policy chief Catherine Marie Ashton expressed hope that Iran will take concrete steps to address the concerns of the international community about the nature of its nuclear program. In a statement issued by semi official news agency ISNA, Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said, his country wants a win -win outcome in talks with world powers over its nuclear program. Our West Asia Correspondent reports that the Istanbul talks follow the third round of meeting over Iran's controversial nuclear program in Moscow. The meeting is aimed at seeking clarifications from Iran on the proposals made by the six major world powers to Iran at Moscow round of talks. Iran’s response and a technical roadmap will be up for discussion at the talks. Western nations have asked Iran to stop higher grade Uranium enrichment, shut down its Fordow underground facility, ship enriched uranium to other countries and allow credible inspections. Iran says its rights of uranium enrichment are non negotiable. Western nations allege Iran is trying to develop atom bomb under the cover of its nuclear program. Iran insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful civilian purposes. The outcome of the talks is significant in the wake of a US legislation cutting off institutions engaged in Iranian oil sales from US banking networks and embargo on Iranian oil imports EU from July 1.
