ISRO plans moon mission with Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the USA

The Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO has announced that it is planning another moon mission jointly with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, JPL of the US. The Space Commission, India's apex space policy body, yesterday gave ISRO the go-ahead to partner with JPL, which has sent missions to Mars and Venus, for the project named 'Moon Rise' which could be launched by the US Space agency NASA. ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan said in New Delhi that the NASA has invited proposals under its New Frontiers Programme announced in 2009.As per the cooperation agreement, ISRO will send a satellite to orbit around the moon to transmit data to earth from rover JPL plans to send to the lunar surface. As part of the project, JPL plans to drop a robotic lander into a basin at the moon's south pole to return lunar rocks back to Earth for study. The mission, if selected, will be launched in 2016.Mr Radhakrishnan said, the proposal is the outcome of India-US cooperation announced during the visit of President Barack Obama to India last year. He said, India's contribution to the project could amount to about 150 million dollars. Meanwhile, Space Commission has set the ball rolling for a top-level restructuring of Antrix Corporation, ISRO's commercial arm which is caught in the eye of a storm over its controversial S Band Spectrum deal with Devas Multimedia, a private firm. The Commission, at a meeting chaired by Mr Radhakrishnan, was apprised of the actions taken to terminate the deal. The Space Commission also appointed a three-member search committee to identify a new full-time Chairman for Antrix, who will be separate from the ISRO Chairman. Secretary, Department of Space is also the Chairman of Space Commission, ISRO and Antrix Corporation. Currently, Mr Radhakrishnan holds the four posts. Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Mr Radhakrishnan said, it was decided to have a new Chairman-cum-Managing Director for Antrix considering it’s newly acquired 'mini ratna' status.
