Israeli military criticises troops for killing Palestinian demonstrators

The Israeli military has criticised its own soldiers for killing four young Palestinian demonstrators in the West Bank last month.

The Palestinians, one of whom was 15 years old, were shot in the space of 24 hours in two incidents near Nablus. Israeli Defence Force (IDF) commander Major General Avi Mizrahi said the incidents were an unnecessary operational occurrence with dire consequences.

The IDF will now decide whether to take disciplinary action against the soldiers. Mohammed Qadus, 15, and Osayed Qadus, 20, were killed during protests on 20 March in which stones were thrown at soldiers near an Israeli settlement. Palestinian and human rights groups said the young men were killed with live ammunition. Later two men were killed near a military checkpoint.
