Israel rejects resolution adopted by NPT review conference

Israel has said that it is not obligated by the resolution adopted by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference that singled out Israel on the issue of non-proliferation. In a statement received by AIR in Dubai, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office called the resolution "deeply flawed and hypocritical" for focusing on Israel while ignoring the Iranian nuclear program. It added that as a non-signatory state of the NPT, Israel is not obligated by the decisions of this Conference, which has no authority over Israel. Iran on the other hand has termed the resolution ‘a step forward in creating a world without atomic weapons’. Iran's ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency Ali Asghar Soltanieh talking to IRNA called on Israel to open its undeclared atomic facilities to international inspection. Another important country in the region, Egypt has also welcomed the decision and termed the final document as a balanced deal and a step toward a nuclear weapons-free world. In a statement, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit called on Israel to sign the NPT. The accord was agreed upon by all 189 members of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty at the 2010 review conference in New York. The members called for a conference in 2012 to be attended by Middle Eastern states – including Iran – to establish the zone. The document unanimously agreed also said that Israel should sign the NPT.
