Israel govt under pressure to secure release of its soldier Gilad

Israel government is under immense domestic pressure to secure the release of its soldier Gilad Shalit who is held captive by Hamas since 2006.

Shalit’s family started a 12-day march on 27th June from northern Israel in a bid to put pressure on the government. They are heading towards Jerusalem and thousands of people joined them on route. They have also decided to set up camp outside Prime Minister Netanyahu's residence, to press for their demand.

Agreeing to free 1000 Palestinian prisoners in return for the release of Shalit, Israeli Prime minister Netanyahu has said that Israel is ready to pay a heavy price to free Shalit, but not any price.

Meanwhile Hamas, who rules Gaza has said that they will not release Shalit unless Tel Aviv agrees to meet the Palestinians' demands. Hamas wants Israel to release hundreds of prisoners, including several top militants but Israel has refused to meet their demand.

Earlier Egypt’s attempt to broker an indirect deal between Israel and Hamas to secure the release of Israeli soldier in lieu of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners ended without a result.
